Elephant Rocks

The large hummocky rock formations that look a lot like elephants are the remains of an ancient seabed. Uplift of the land by tectonic processes, changes in sea level and erosion have exposed this fossil-rich limestone deposited 23-25 million years ago.

When first exposed, the limestone was in large unbroken sheets. Over time, weathering by rain, ice and wind eroded the limestone, leaving behind isolated ‘elephants’. Softer sediments erode more readily, especially at joints.

Taking time to wander among this incredible boulder field that towers above your head is the best way to appreciate the unique rounded shapes, some of which do resemble elephants if a little imagination is used.

The Elephant Rocks area was used as a filming location for the first Chronicles of Narnia movie in 2005.

Located 1 hour's drive from Discovery Countrytime Hotel Omarama, there is a parking bay opposite Elephant Rocks. The Alps 2 Ocean Cycle Trail passes this site.

The rocks are on private land so visitors are asked to be respectful of all signage and roaming stock. Public access is permitted via a short 5-minute walk across the farmland. Entry by donation!
